Sleep is essential for healthy physical and mental functioning, but sometimes it’s more difficult than it seems. We all know the struggles of not being able to fall asleep quickly, tossing and turning throughout the night, waking up feeling tired instead of refreshed, and so on. If you’d like to get better quality sleep, try these 5 tips!

🌙 Limit blue light exposure: Blue light affects your circadian rhythm and reduces melatonin, an important hormone for sleep. Try not to look at any electronics 1-2 hours before bed or wear blue light glasses.

🌙 Avoid caffeine after 3pm: Caffeine stimulates your nervous system and can make it hard for your mind and body to relax at night. Stick with drinking coffee in the morning hours, rather than the afternoon or night.

🌙 Establish a routine: A consistent sleep routine will allow your brain to be aware of when it’s time to sleep. Try a calming activity, like taking a bath or reading a book, before going to bed around the same time each day.

🌙 Minimize sound & light: Loud noises and bright lights can make it hard to peacefully fall asleep. Make your bedroom a dark, quiet place, or wear a sleep mask and earplugs if necessary.

🌙 Be active during the day: Exercising during the day has been shown to reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep at night. Just don’t work out too close to bedtime because your adrenaline levels may still be high.

☻ We all know how important it is to work hard at your job, school, and other aspects of life. However, we often forget how important it is to take breaks and have fun, too! Making time for things that bring you joy can improve your life all around.

☻ When you take part in a fun activity, dopamine is released, which leads to more positivity and happiness. Cortisol also decreases, which leads to less stress, better sleep, and better memory. Increased creativity, energy, and productivity are amazing benefits, as well.

☻ Make sure to prioritize your wellbeing by scheduling breaks during your day or week. You're allowed to have fun and not feel guilty about it! After all, engaging in fun activities will make you more productive and happier in the long run. #onelifecounseling #havefun
